South of the city in Thessaloniki in north-central Greece, a large forest fire forced thousands of people to evacuate the southern tip of the Kasandra Peninsula on21 August 2006. The racing fire forced people to the coastline of the popular tourist area, where many were evacuated by boats. This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on 22 August. The locations where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red. Smoke spreads east and south over the AegeanSea.
