On 13 July 2004, the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of two large fires burning in California: theMeadow Fire (north) is burning in Yellowstone National Park and was started bylightning, while the Pine Fire (large fire to the south) is burning northwest ofLos Angeles. Close-up views of each fire appear in the right half of the image(Source: EarthObservatory).
