Forest Fires in the Russian Federation
4 May 2000
Starting with the forest fire season 2000 the GFMC expands its services in providing remote sensing data of forest fires in the Russian Federation.
Selected fire occurrence maps which are prepared daily by the Russian GFMC correspondent Dr. Anatoly Sukhinin, Fire Laboratory of the Sukachev Institute of Forest, Karsnoyarsk, are displayed.
Today, on 4 May 2000, main fire regions are in Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk and in the Republic of Buryatia.

The GOES and NOAA/AVHRR satellite images of 2 May 2000 reflect the fire situation in Eastern Russia (Siberia).

Numerous heat signatures (red) and smoke (light blue) are visible from the fires burning in Eastern Russia. Additional fires may be obscured by clouds.

One of the results of the first international fire science conference in the Russian Federation (1993) was the publication of a monograph on fire in boreal Eurasia, including some selected contributions on boreal North America. The literature cited in the monograph contains numerous publications which in many cases are not easily accessible. To facilitate literature search the bibliographical sources are provided by topic (chapter).
