Several vegetation fires were detected by OSEI with the NOAA-14 POES AVHRR HRPT satellites.
Fig.2. and 3. The image on the left shows heat signatures and smoke from fires burning near Lake Athabasca and Lake Claire in northeastern Alberta, 20 June 1999. The right image shows fires signatures from burn scars and areas of fire burning in Manitoba and Ontario, 21 June 1999. Some smoke is visible as well but it is difficult to distinguish it from cloud cover present in the region. Yellow arrows designate areas that are probably due to actively-burning fires and white arrows indicate areas that are likely smoldering ground or burn scars.

The above maps and all maps of previous days can be directly accessed at the Fire Monitoring, Mapping, and Modelling (FireM3) Project website (the FireM3 project is a collaboration of the Canadian Forest Service and the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing). Through the Map Link you can access daily hotspot images. An Internet Map Server, which is like a simple GIS running on the host computer, allows you to zoom in on any fire or other area of interest and view the image and map data at full (1km) resolution. You can also click on any fire and get information about that fire.
Saskatchewan Daily Forest Fire Situation Report (10:00 AM Monday, 21 June, 1999):
There are 45 forest fires burning in the province today.
5 fires have been extinguished in the past 24 hours.
22 new fires have been reported.
Total number of fires to date this year is 270.
Total to date last year was 454, FIVE year average is 301.
