Regional Australasia Wildland Fire Network

A Region of the Global Wildland Fire Network

The Australasian regional networking activity includes primarily the Australian continent, New Zealand and the Pacific. Australia’s fire problems are currently in the focus of fire managers and policymakers in the region. The country is facing a dilemma: On the one hand, Australia’s wildlands are extremely well adapted to fire and need to be treated by prescribed fire. On the other hand, there is a trend of building homes in the wildlands around the Australian cities. This exurban trend of settlement has created new vulnerabilities and conflicts concerning the use of fire as a management tool. Under the light of extreme droughts and recently experienced losses by wildfires, new solutions are required to address the increasing fire problems on the continent.
