Fire in Samos under control – Ashraf at least 4,000 acres

25 August 2019

GREECE – The picture is better in the Mesokampos of Samos as the fire is said to have been partially controlled. There are minor rejuvenations inside the burnt space without an active front.

Firefighters and volunteers remain at the site, however. There are currently 31 firefighters with 13 vehicles, a 38-person hike and volunteers.
The firefighters fought a night-long battle against the flames and strong winds.

Recall that last night, for precautionary reasons, tourists were removed from hotels in the area to the beaches of Glikoriza and Proteas, as well as residents of Mesokambos, who were transferred to the Pythagorion indoor gym by boats and buses.

According to samos24.gr, the fire is estimated to have burnt 4,000 acres of forest, while a special fire brigade is expected to arrive on the island to determine the exact causes of the fire. It is pointed out that there are several testimonies by residents that the fire came from a PPC column that was burning sparks.

Four hotels were evacuated yesterday, with tourists being transported by sea and buses and spending the night in nearby hotels and at the Pythagorion Municipal Indoor Gym.

By noon it is estimated that tourists will return to their lodgings, as the hotels will have to be cleaned of ashes first.
