SOUTH AFRICA – The Department of Transport has conveyed its condolences to the families and friends of the victims of two major crashes that took place in the past 48 hours.

Ten people were killed on Monday on the N3 South at Volsloorus when a Freightliner Truck came to a complete stop due to a veld fire and smoke across the freeway.

As a result, a number of other vehicles crashed into each other in the multiple vehicle pile up.

Nine people were declared dead on the scene and 20 other patients were transported to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

The other major crash occurred on Sunday on the R37 at Chuenespoort, in Limpopo where two vehicles collided head-on, killing six people.

The Department of Transport says it’s directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation in conjunction with its provincial counterparts to expedite investigations into the cause of these two major accidents.

The Road Accident Fund has also been directed to give the families of the deceased and the injured the necessary support and comfort.
