AUSTRALIA – Unattended campfires caused two large bushfires that destroyed more than 30 river red gum trees – some more than 300 years old – in the Murray Sunset National Park near Lake Cullulleraine on Tuesday.
Embers from two campfires left unattended near the Swifts Creek Track over the weekend were spread during the peak of the dust storm that hit Mildura about 3.30pm Tuesday.
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) incident controller Steve Russell said it took 15 firefighters three hours to contain the bushfires.
