Firefighters contain 120-acre Merritt Island brush fire

USA – A Saturday afternoon thunderstorm helped firefighters contain a 120-acre brush fire that burned up to the shoulder of Peacocks Pocket Road at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The blaze broke out about 1 p.m., and it was likely sparked by smoldering material from a Friday lightning strike, said Patrick Pearson, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fire management officer.

USFWS and Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel deployed two brush trucks to battle the flames. Pearson said the thunderstorm rumbled across the wildlife refuge after 4 p.m., knocking down the brush fire.

No structures were threatened, he said.
