Indi A forest fire was reported from B.R. Hills in the Yellandur forest range of the B.R.T. Tiger Reserve on Friday. Though the extent of damage is yet to be assessed, sources said it was reported in the morning and was controlled only by late in the evening.
When contacted, Conservator of Forests Lingaraju dismissed it as a routine fire. When pressed for an estimate of the damage to vegetation, Mr. Lingaraju said it was a ridiculous question and he was not there to feed information to the press.
However, other sources said the damage was extensive and it was suspected that the fire was deliberately stoked. The vegetation was fully dry.Besides, a portion of the forest was infested with lantana weed, which acted as a good source of combustion. Fire was also reported at Kurimande in Punjoor range and was yet to be brought under control, according to sources.
