Portugal — The “arsonists” who were believed having set fire at Serra de Caramulo, a central mountainous region in Portugal, last year, were sentenced to 18 and 12 years of prison respectively on Friday, according to local media reports.

Luis Patrick was sentenced to 18 years and Fernando Marinho, who is aged under 21, was sentenced to 12 years. The jury considered that it was proven that they had both ridden a motorbike in the mountains on the night of Aug. 20, 2013 and had set fire in various locations.

Patrick denied having anything to do with the fires during the trial, while Marinho confessed he had collaborated in the crime.

The fire killed four firefighters and thousands of hectares of the forest were destroyed last summer.
