Italy — A fire in Mercallo, near Varese, destroyed two hectares of forest and left one person wounded. Firemen from the Ticino Park squad laboured till late last night to quench the flames near a hill accosting a residential area. The fire apparently broke out when a man decided to burn some scrubs, resulting in burns on his face, arms and a thigh. Two helicopters had to intervene to put out the fire.
