Portugal — The Portuguese cabinet has given the green light to authorities to spend €12.9 million on hiring aircraft to fight forest fires this summer.

Gen. Arnaldo Cruz, chief of the civil protection authority, recently acknowledged that the forest fire budget had been slashed by 20% affecting air support in particular. The cabinet statement noted that “forest fires affect Portugal every summer” and the funds would be used to help ensure air cover for the firemen.
