Australia — Fire crews say they are confident they will be able to contain a large blaze in Victoria’s south-west by Tuesday morning.

About 100 firefighters are creating containment lines around the 700 hectare bushfire in the Mt Richmond National Park, near Portland.

The communities of Portland, Curries, Lower Cape Bridgewater, Tarragal, Cashmore, Gorae West and Mount Richmond Trewalla have been placed on alert and told to check their bushfire survival plans.

Incident controller Andrew Morrow says crews will tackle the blaze through the night.

“Further backburing on the south boundary track, consolidating the edges that we’ve undertaken back burning work on and just making sure all the edges are secure around the perimeter,” he said.
