Australia — Professor Roger Stone, from the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba on the state’s Darling Downs, will run the UN study for the next four years.

He says his role will be to coordinate research that is being conducted all over the world.

“For example, Spain and the Mediterranean countries have been undergoing exactly the same droughts and bushfires and so on and huge forest fires that Australia’s had,” he said.

“We hope we can understand the lessons learnt from that part of the world that we could apply in Australia and vice versa.”
