Malaysia — The peat fires in Kampung Pulau Kempas, Kuala Langat and Batu 9, Sejangkang, Banting, have been put out. They were extinguished yesterday.

However, firemen are now fighting another fire which flared up in Bestari Jaya in Kuala Selangor.

Fire and Rescue Department deputy director (operations) Abdul Razak Muda said about 70ha had caught fire in the inner areas of Bestari Jaya.

“This fire is among the biggest so far but we have managed to put out about 50ha already,” he said.

He added that the remaining 20ha should be extinguished by today.

“The cause of the fire is still being investigated,” Abdul Razak added.

Meanwhile, Air Pollutant Index readings indicated that the number of areas with good air quality had risen from 30% to 34%.

Port Klang, however, plunged from moderate to unhealthy air quality levels with readings of 76 to 135.

The areas that improved from moderate to good levels are Langkawi, Kedah, Seri Manjung, SK Jalan Pegoh, Tanjung Malim, Jalan Tasek – all in Ipoh, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, and Tawau, Sabah.
