India — Two fire tenders fought for more than three hours to douse the fire in a portion of the forest atop Chamundi Hill yesterday. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
At about 2 pm, thick smoke was billowing from the forests near the Tavarekatte area. Soon, it spread to the adjoining place.
Some persons, who noticed the fire immediately, informed the Police outpost atop Chamundi Hill. They, in turn, alerted the fire brigade.
Within a few minutes, two fire tenders arrived at the spot. It took nearly three hours for them to extinguish the engulfing flames. The fire and smoke were visible from a distance of one to two km.
On receiving the information, a team of forest officials led by the Assistant Conservator of Forests also went to the spot to supervise the operation.
Meanwhile, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) of Mysore Circle Shaswati Mishra said that a cigarette butt thrown by some persons might have caused the fire as this is not the season for forest fire.
According to a preliminary estimate, the fire had damaged around four acres of the forest. Details about the extent of damage will be ascertained after a thorough inspection.
