Northern Ireland, UK — Slieve Guillion Forest Park in County Armagh has been brought under control byfirefighters.
Over 100 firefighters were called in to tackle the blaze, with teams arriving from Lurgan, Dungiven and Magherafelt. The fire, which is thought to have started early on Wednesday afternoon, soon covered over 20,000 metres of land on the side of the mountain, before being contained in the early evening. The site was also monitored overnight by firecrews.
Speaking today, district forest manager, John Watson, said he was relieved that firefighters had been able to deal with the conflagration before it spread to furtherareas.
“It could have been a very serious fire had it got out into the open mountain,” he added.
