Jamaica — Fire fighters from the Black River Fire Department have been battling a massive bush fire in the communities of Berlin and St. Mary.

The fire which started shortly after 10 o’clock Tuesday morning in the Malvern Hills, quickly spread to the neighbouring communities.

A unit from Black River responded, however the fire fighters were hampered by the lack of adequate water.

They also had difficulty accessing the hilly terrain.

Senior Deputy Superintendent of the St. Elizabeth Fire Department, Homer Morris, says the fire has now been contained in a valley in Berlin.

He said while no homes are being threatened the fire fighters will continue to keep a close watch on the situation.

It’s believed that over 160 acres or 60 hectares of pasture and farm lands have been affected by the blaze.
