Gardai believe that an overnight forest fire near Ballingarry was started accidentally.
Over 60 acres of forestry and a further 60 acres of gorse and scrubland were destroyed in the fire which broke out at around 9.20pm.
Four appliances and three water carriers from the Newcastle West, Rathkeale and Kilmallock fire brigades worked for almost seven hours, until 4.30am, to bring the blaze under control.
A Garda forensic expert is helping with the investigation but malicious intent is not suspected.
Caller to Limerick Today; Ursula was travelling from Tournafulla to Newcastle West when she witnessed the extraordinary sight.
