Havana, 21 April 2005 (Prensa Latina) Cuban special forces put out a large forest fire in the mountain ranges of Cienfuegos, 159 miles East of Havana, Granma newspaper reported Thursday.
Planes, forest rangers from the Interior Ministry, people from Cumanayagua Coffee Enterprise and volunteers of the zone joined efforts to extinguish the fire that damaged about 1,090 hectares.
Experts considered that the spreading of the flames was influenced by the zone´s intense drought, causing lack of significant rain for the last 22 months.
The source of the blaze is still unknown and is being investigated, stated the daily.
