Fire fighting operations are winding down at the scene of the Piliga Forest fire that has burned out almost 6,000 hectares, near Narrabri in north-east of New South Wales.
The blaze began in the Bibblewindi State Forest, east of Bohena Creek, on Christmas Eve.
Staff from State Forests and the National Parks And Wildlife Service, as well as 150 Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers, turned out to control the fire.
Six aircraft were used to water bomb the blaze, which had a perimeter of more than 50 kilometres.
RFS spokesman Shaun Chipman says there were fears the savage weather conditions could have sparked a repeat of the massive bushfire that burned out hundreds of thousands of hectares of the Piliga Forest in the 1990s.
