8th International Workshop of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Forest Fires
20-21 October 2011, Stresa, Italy

The 8th International Workshop of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Forest Fires will take place in Stresa, Italy, on 20-21 October 2011. The workshop is organized by the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing, Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and the University of Alcalá.

The Stresa workshop is the latest in a series of technical meetings organised by the EARSeL SIG on Forest Fires after its foundation in 1995. Previous meetings were held in Alcalá de Henares (1995), Luso (1998), Paris (2001), Ghent (2003), Zaragoza (2005), Thessaloniki (2007) and Matera (2009) resulting in outstanding progress made in forest fire research.

Since the main subject of the workshop will be the operational use of remote sensing in forest fire management, paper contributions are expected to focus on local to global RS and GIS applications on:

  • Pre-fire assessment planning and management

  • Fire detection and monitoring

  • Post-fire evaluation and management

The main activities of the Workshop will include lectures given by invited speakers and poster sessions. Selected papers presented during the workshop will be included in a special issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire. Previous workshops resulted in the publication of special issues of the International Journal of Remote Sensing, the Remote Sensing of Environment, Journal of Geophysical Research, and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing. Full texts of the lectures given and the extended abstracts of papers presented will be included in the Proceedings book of the workshop.
