Forest Fire on Mallorca/Spain

11 October 1999

The heaviest forest fire in this year on Mallorca has destroyed more than 700 hectares of bush land and pine woods. The fires were probably actively setted in by arsonists, as the environment ministry of the Balearic Islands reported. On Sunday the fire department had the flames under control. The fire was broken out in the night to the Saturday in the northeast of the island on several places simultaneously. The flames spread on a front of five kilometers. In the past fires have been setted frequently in this region.
