The above mentioned fire situation map can be directly accessed at the Fire Monitoring, Mapping, and Modelling (FireM3) Project website (the FireM3 project is a collaboration of the Canadian Forest Service and the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing). Through the Map Link you can access daily hotspot images. An Internet Map Server, which is like a simple GIS running on the host computer, allows you to zoom in on any fire or other area of interest and view the image and map data at full (1km) resolution. You can also click on any fire and get information about that fire.
Vegetation fires were detected by OSEI with the NOAA-15 POES AVHRR HRPT satellite on 5 August 1999.

very dense plumes of smoke from areas of fire burning west of the Mackenzie River in the
Northwest Territories. The smoke from these fires is drifting over the Mackenzie Bay. The
right image shows heat signatures and smoke plumes from areas of fire burning to the
southeast of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories and in northern Saskatchewan.

Fig.4. The image below is showing forest fires in a close up view of two
large fires in Northwest Territories on August 4. The fires were first detected by
satellite June 18-19. The fire to the north is mostly obscured by cloud, while the fire to
the south has burned about 138,000 ha or 1,380 km2 (based on a digitized perimeter).

Saskatchewan Daily Forest Fire Situation Report (10:00 AM Thursday, 5 August 1999):
There are 23 forest fires burning in the province today.
NO fires have been extinguished in the past 24 hours.
3 new fires have been reported.
Total number of fires to date this year is 567.
Total to date last year was 1015, FIVE year average is 540.
