International Union of ForestryResearch Organizations (IUFRO)

Unit 8.01.10

Until the early 1990s the activities of the IUFRO Unit 8.01.10 (former Subject Group S 1.09 and Research Group 8.05.00) was restricted to co-sponsoring fire conferences. In 1994 it was intended to involve IUFRO (http://www.iufro.org/) more actively in fire research. It was recognized, however, that several international organizations had developed focused forest fire research programmes, such as the IGBP-IGAC-BIBEX and the IBFRA. At the IUFRO XX World Congress in Finland it was agreed to keep the group alive as a liaison node between IUFRO and the other fire research programmes. The XX World Congress (Tampere, Finland, 1995) was utilized as a forum in which boreal fire scientists evaluated the FIRESCAN Bor Forest Island Fire Experiment.

Following the evaluation of the international FIRESCAN project at the IUFRO XX World Congress the results are published in full length:

FIRESCAN Science Team. 1996. Fire in ecosystems of boreal Eurasia: The Bor Forest Island Fire Experiment, Fire Research Campaign Asia-North (FIRESCAN). In: Biomass burning and global change. Vol.II (J.S.Levine, ed.), 848-873. The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA.

Current Activities of 8.05.00

The last IUFRO Group 8.05 meetings were held in Rogow, Poland, 1-3 June 1999 (see: Recommendations of IUFRO 8.05 and the publication of the complete proceedings of the meeting) and at the XXI World Congress, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2000 (http://iufro.boku.ac.at/iufro/congress/). At that last World Congress the fire group organized a series of focussed oral and poster sessions. For full papers see the PDF file Forests and Society: The Role of Research Sub-Plenary Sessions (12.5 MB PDF file, Acrobat Reader required).

.

IUFRO supports the concepts of the FAO/ECE/ILO Team of Specialists on Forest Fire and the fire science projects under the IGBP to share expertise with other regions of the world. IUFRO continues to co-sponsor UN-FAO/ECE International Forest Fire News and the Global Fire Monitoring Center.
