Under an agreement reached after court-ordered mediation between forest activists, forest products industry, and federal government officials, sixty million board feet of timber burned on the Bitterroot National Forest during the 2000 wildfire season will be salvaged over the next two years. Nineteen timber sales will be conducted on 14,700 acres burned by the 2000 wildfires. Removed—at least temporarily—from the Bitterroot’s work list were another 19 salvage sales affecting about 29,300 acres.
