SPAIN – EIGHTY-SEVEN PER CENT of Valencian Community municipalities have yet to produce their Local Forest-Fire Prevention Plan (PLIPF).

These plans are obligatory, the Public Prosecution Department’s Environment section reminded them two years.

Of the 525 town halls required to produce a PLIPF, 17 are exempt because there are no woodlands inside their boundaries. Only 69 of the remainder have complied and since summer 2018, the Generalitat’s Environment department has given the go-ahead to only eight of the submitted plans.

All are in Alicante Province – Agost, Alcalali, Almudaina, Benifallim, Crevillent, l’Orxa, Salinas y Tibi – and their PLIPFs were approved within the last three months.

Meanwhile, 254 municipalities received official aid to draw up plans that should have been presented by July, prompting the Prosecution department to remind them that not possessing a PLPIF will be considered a crime were a forest fire to occur.
