Public participation crucial for combating forest fires: HP CM

INDIA – Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday flagged off four Forest Fire Prevention and Control Awareness Vehicles here and said participation of general public and local communities in prevention and management of such fires was very crucial.

Talking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that since forest fires causes lot of damage to forest wealth and wildlife, it was essential that administrative and technical measures were taken to combat it. He said that these include both preventive and remedial measures.

Thakur said sensitising the general public was important to combat forest fires, adding  that to educate the people fire awareness campaign would continue till March 20 in five sensitive areas of different forest divisions.

He said that exhibitions interactive sessions and street plays would be held under this campaign in different parts of the State to motivate the people to extend their cooperation in preventing and controlling forest fires.

He urged the people to give their wholehearted support to make the campaign a success so that precious forest wealth of the state could be prevented from fire.

Forest Minister Govind Singh Thakur, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Ajay Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Wild Life Savita and other Officers of the department were also present on the occasion.
