CHILE – (Prensa Latina) At least four communes in La Araucania Region, in southern Chile, are now on red alert for forest fires, the National Emergency Office (ONEMI) reported.

ONEMI explained that the fire has affected about 250 hectares of vegetation in the Pitrufquen and Gorbea communes, but the intensity with which the flames progress has endangered populated areas.

In Los Sauces commune, the red alert was also declared for a fire that already affected about 100 hectares, and it has also spread near populated centers and important infrastructure.

Meanwhile, in Temuco, capital of La Araucania Region, a fire threatens to destroy the Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, for which ONEMI called to carry out air and land operations to put out the flames.

High temperatures, low humidity and strong winds are factors that stimulate the propagation of fires.
