USA – The City of Malibu will host two public workshops on February 20 and 22 and conduct an online survey to get community feedback as part of the development of the citywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
“The Woolsey Fire was a critical wake-up call to put our wildfire preparedness into overdrive,” said Mayor Karren Farrer. “I am proud of the numerous actions the City has taken to enhance wildfire preparedness since then. The Community Wildfire Protection Plan will be another huge advance, so it’s really important that everyone in the community give their feedback at the workshops and on the survey.”
A CWPP is a community-based plan focused on identifying and addressing local hazards, risks and vulnerabilities from wildfire. It provides a roadmap of action items to help the community prevent, mitigate, respond to and recover from wildfires. It may also help the City qualify for state and federal funding opportunities to ultimately implement the plan.
The workshops and the survey will ensure that the CWPP addresses the unique characteristics, needs and values of the community. They are also meant to give community members the opportunity to understand and participate in the process of developing the CWPP.
The workshops are identical. One will take place Thursday, February 20 at 6 p.m. at Malibu City Hall (23825 Stuart Ranch Rd, Malibu, CA 90265). The second workshop will be on Saturday, February 22 at 10 a.m. at Malibu City Hall.
The City will conduct an online survey in February to gather community input on how to become more resilient to wildfires as part of the development of the CWPP. The survey also enables those unable to attend the public workshops to give their input.
The development of this CWPP is defined in Title I of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA), passed by Congress in 2003 and is funded through a CAL FIRE Community Fire Prevention Grant. The City has commissioned a consulting firm to help complete the Plan.
A CWPP handbook and other information are posted on the City’s Wildfire and Fire Safety web page at www.MalibuCity.org/FireSafety. The survey will be announced on the City website and social media channels and a link to the survey will be on the Wildfire and Fire Safety web page. Once activated, the survey will be available at www.MalibuCity.org/WildfirePlanSurvey. No RSVPs required.
