ITALY – An appeal to the inhabitants of Taibon Agordino to remain closed at home was launched by the mayor because of the fire that is affecting a large portion of the Province of Belluno. To cause the flames, according to the regional councilor for civil protection Gianpaolo Bottacin, could be a tree fallen on the high voltage wires. The two hikers who were stranded at high altitude were rescued.
The two, aged 29 and 34, are fine even if tried by a night spent in a snowy gully. At first the goal of the rescuers was to reach a point upstream of the Besausega canal, where the two were located, and then descend with ropes for about 500 meters. Meanwhile, the fire has been further propagated, but the improvement of weather conditions should favor the shutdown operations.
Rogo fueled by fohn and heat – For hours the fire extinguishing operations have been made difficult by a strong wind of fohn that blows on the area, preventing the use of helicopters. Arpav di Belluno underlines this by explaining that exceptionally high thermal values have been recorded in the mountain area for the current month. A strong wind has blown up and sometimes even in the valleys. On the Dolomite peaks at 3,000 meters, 110-120 kilometers per hour have been exceeded. In Agordo, in particular, in the area of the fire, the gusts were 71 kilometers per hour, in Cortina di 77 and in Longarone of 64.
Black out for a few minutes in the Agordino area – The area of Agordo was involved in an interruption of electricity lasting several minutes, probably due to the collapse of the pylon that then triggered the fire. The drop in supply also involved the Luxottica plant, which however did not register any interference on production, given the entry into operation of autonomous generators.
