ZIMBABWE – A GURUVE woman and her one-year-old daughter were last week burnt by a veld fire.

Patience Chikowore (32) and her daughter were on their way home from their tobacco nursery at Birkdale Farm.

Chantel Mbereko (1) died on admission to Harare Central Hospital, while the mother died on Monday morning.

Family spokesperson and husband to the deceased Mr Christopher Mbereko confirmed the sad event and said: “It is unfortunate that I have lost my family in such a tragic way. What happened is that my wife and our one-year-old daughter had gone to water our tobacco nursery at Plot Number 74, Birkadale Farm since I was not around.

“I heard that on Thursday around 11am as they were coming back a fire broke out in the veld and they were burnt. My daughter died on admission at Harare Hospital, while my wife died this morning as a result of the wounds they sustained.”

Acting Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati, said he could only comment after getting the details.

However, the Guruve community expressed concern over Vilvekia Police Station’s failure to investigate cases in the area.

“I have been receiving complaints from the community under Vilvekia alleging uncooperative attitude of the police. This case is a loss of life, which happened last week Thursday, but it is surprising that the police has not yet gathered any information related to this case,” said Guruve South Member of Parliament, Cde Patrick Dutiro who is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
