AUSTRALIA – The cause of a fast moving fire which broke out at Diamond Head Road in Crowdy Bay National Park will be subject to an investigation.

Crews were alerted to the fire at about 2pm on Sunday, September 16.

A spokesperson from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) said the fire moved rapidly in extreme conditions.

“The cause of the fire is unclear at this point and will be subject to an investigation,” she said.

NPWS and NSW Rural Fire Service firefighters worked through the night on Sunday, September 16 and on Monday, September 17 in an effort to contain the fire.

NSW Fire and Rescue also responded and provided safety advice to property owners to the north of the fire.

The spokesperson said crews implemented backburning from Camden Haven Inlet out to Diamond Head Road, to stop the northern spread of the fire.

“This work was undertaken in testing conditions with winds exceeding 50 kilometres p/h,” she said.

“All crews did a commendable job in stopping the northern spread of the fire.”NPWS and RFS firefighters worked together on Monday, September 17 to bring the fire under control.

“They intend to consolidate backburning along the eastern containment line where required, and to patrol and mop-up the northern and eastern containment lines,” the spokesperson said.

“Weather conditions have eased today (Monday, September 17) from the dangerous winds experienced on Sunday, September 16.”

NSW and the mid-north coast are experiencing very dry conditions at present.

“Therefore fire crews will remain vigilant until we receive decent rain and conditions improve,” the NPWS spokesperson said.

The community is reminded fire crews are currently working in the Diamond Head Road area and they are advised to avoid the area for their own safety.
