FINLAND – The municipality of Pyhäranta organizes crisis relief – extinguishing works continue for days: “We have been waiting here for nature’s own watering”

The extinguishing work of Pyhäranta Forest Fire continues. Juha Virto, who is in charge of the fire, tells the rescue department to make sure that the fire extinguishes at or after the week shift.

– The weather report for the next 6-7 days tells us that yes there is still a long time, Virto says.

Firefighting is carried out by the Rescue Department in difficult forest conditions. One problem has arisen is the fact that the palaces can fall under the ground, at depths of several tens of centimeters. Turning them off requires a lot of watering.

“We have been waiting here for nature’s own watering, but it is hardly a week,” Virto says.

Another problem is the wind that, when blowing, spreads the fire. Currently, however, the area is not windy.

Included are the helicopters of the Defense Forces and the Border Guard and the Finnish Aviation Rescue Society aircraft. Police resources are also involved.

In addition, fireworks have been helped by various volunteer organizations such as the orchestra clubs and Martat.

Yesterday and today some 50 people have been evacuated as a backup. According to the rescue department, the municipality of Pyhäranta has organized a crisis aid for those in need.
