CHILE – TALCA.- In a weekend that the Altos de Lircay National Reserve was expecting only the usual movement of tourists, things finally turned out very differently. A forest fire was declared in the area of El Candado last Friday, which is why the Onemi, with information provided by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), decreed Red Alert in the commune of San Clemente.
As a result, resources were immediately deployed that included a Conaf brigade, an airplane and two helicopters, plus two technicians and two park rangers.
As reported by the regional director of Onemi, Carlos Bernales, until yesterday afternoon there were 7.2 hectares burned, while the information of the previous day accounted for 2.3 ha. until that moment.
The authority indicated that yesterday’s work focused on leaving the fire contained, for today to focus on the effort to extinguish it. “If everything goes according to schedule,” he said.
The reasons for the fire have not yet been determined, and the investigation is expected to begin today.
TOURISTIC INTEREST
The place where the fire occurred is a sector rather removed from the reserve. Although, as the manager of the Emergency Office of San Clemente, César Pérez, there are also trails in this place and hikers and muleteers usually get there.
Precisely in this month of May many tourists come to the reserve for being a time where nature shows a colorful spectacle.
In fact, a few days ago the newspaper El Mercurio mentioned it as one of the ten forests in Chile that should be known in the autumn. “The ideal month to visit the Maule mountain range is May, when the leaves of the trees in places like the Altos de Lircay National Reserve should have left the green behind,” the article said.
There was also mentioned as species with abundant presence in the area to the oak, lenga and bushes of ñirres. Regarding wildlife, the Conaf website mentions that “the unit stands out for the protection of the fauna species the pudu, the puma and the loica”.
RELEVANCE OF THE RED ALERT
When asked about the importance of having immediately declared Red Alert in front of this forest fire, the person in charge of Emergencies of the Municipality of San Clemente, indicated that “the declaration to consideration of the technical report of Conaf was very relevant, because when there is a Red Alert it they reinforce all the resources that already exist to be able to control the situation. And this was the case because the resources that allowed the mobilization of the helicopters were quickly released. ”
For its part, the regional director of Onemi commented that the aerial work, in addition, was done “in extreme conditions. With gusts of wind. ” In addition, the work on the ground was complicated by the slopes of the difficult topography of the place.
FIRST FIRE THIS YEAR
Even with the emergency, access to the reservation remained open Saturday and Sunday.

Para hoy se espera lograr la extinción del incendio en reserva Altos de Lircay
CHILE – TALCA.- En un fin de semana que la Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay esperaba sólo el movimiento habitual de los turistas, finalmente las cosas se dieron de manera muy distinta. Un incendio forestal se declaró en la zona de El Candado el viernes pasado, razón por la cual la Onemi, con información proporcionada por la Corporación NAcional Forestal (Conaf), decretó Alerta Roja en la comuna de San Clemente.
Por consiguiente, de inmediato se desplegaron recursos que incluyeron una brigada de Conaf, un avión y dos helicópteros, más dos técnicos y dos guardaparques.
Según informó el director regional de Onemi, Carlos Bernales, hasta ayer en la tarde había 7,2 hectáreas quemadas, en tanto las informaciones del día anterior contabilizaban 2,3 ha. hasta ese momento.
La autoridad indicó que el trabajo de ayer domingo se centró en dejar contenido el incendio, para el día de hoy centrarse en el esfuerzo de extinguirlo. “Si todo sale de acuerdo a lo programado”, acotó.
Las razones del incendio en tanto aún no han sido determinadas, y se espera iniciar la investigación el día de hoy.
INTERÉS TURÍSTICO
El lugar donde se produjo el incendio es un sector más bien retirado de la reserva. Si bien, como indicó el encargado de la oficina de Emergencias de San Clemente, César Pérez, en este lugar también hay senderos y a él acceden habitualmente excursionistas y arrieros.
Precisamente en este mes de mayo muchos turistas llegan hasta la reserva por ser una época donde la naturaleza muestra un colorido espectáculo.
En efecto, hace pocos días el diario El Mercurio lo mencionaba como uno de los diez bosques de Chile que se deben conocer en otoño. “El mes ideal para visitar la cordillera del Maule es mayo, cuando las hojas de los árboles en sitios como la Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay ya deberían haber dejado el verde atrás”, consignaba el artículo.
Allí también se mencionaba como especies con abundante presencia en la zona al roble, lenga y los matorrales de ñirres. En cuanto a la fauna, la página web de Conaf menciona que “la unidad destaca por la protección de las especies de fauna el pudú, el puma y la loica”.
PERTINENCIA DE LA ALERTA ROJA
Consultado sobre la importancia de haber declarado de inmediato Alerta Roja ante este incendio forestal, el encargado de Emergencias de la Municipalidad de San Clemente, indicó que “fue muy atingente la declaración a consideración del informe técnico de Conaf, porque cuando hay una Alerta Roja se refuerzan todos los recursos que ya existen para poder controlar la situación. Y este fue el caso porque rápidamente se liberaron los recursos que permitieron movilizar los helicópteros”.
Por su parte el director regional de Onemi comentó que el trabajo aéreo, además, se hizo “en condiciones extremas. Con ráfagas de viento”. Además el trabajo en tierra fue complicado por las pendientes de la difícil topografía del lugar.
PRIMER INCENDIO ESTE AÑO
Aún con la emergencia, el acceso a la reserva permaneció abierto sábado y domingo.
Cabe señalar finalmente que este es el primer incendio que se produce en la reserva este año.
“Es poco habitual que se produzcan focos de incendio al interior de la reserva. Nosotros como comuna no tuvimos ninguna Alerta Roja por incendio forestal esta temporada. Esta fue nuestra primera Alerta Roja comunal por incendio forestal”, señaló César Pérez.
