New Large Animal Rescue Project During Brush Fires Set To Be Implemented

Large animal rescues during brush fires are set to be provided by the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) and the Department of Animal Care and Control, according to officials.
“As you know, many areas of Northern Los Angeles County are extremely vulnerable to wildland fires,” according to the news release. “It is vitally important that your preparedness plans include your animals.”
If residents have small animals such as dogs, cats, fish, birds, the LACoFD encourages residents to develop a plan ahead of time so that when the need to evacuate with your pets arises, you are prepared to do so.
If you have large animals, particularly horses, the LACoFD and the Department of Animal Care and Control are asking you to provide information that can help them support you should you need to evacuate your horses or large animals.
During a wildland fire, firefighters and fire equipment are challenged to efficiently get into areas when trailers are evacuating horses. Developing a plan to work closely with our horse communities will help ensure the safety of everyone involved, according to the news release.
LACoFD officials encourage residents with large animals to make record of their horses and livestock with the county by completing the survey that can be printed below. Instructions for which department agency to send completed surveys is listed on each of the forms.
“The Fire Department will be in a position to make every effort to contact you directly during a wildland fire to either alert you of the need to evacuate your horses, shelter them in place or that your property and horses are not currently in danger,” according to the news release. “It is important to note that this information will not be used now or in the future for any enforcement purposes whatsoever. This is strictly for the use of the Fire Department and Animal Care and Control for public safety purposes.”
