UP on high alert as haze affects visibility; road accidents claim lives

INDIA: Lucknow, Nov 8 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday sounded high alert over the prevailing fog-like conditions in western and other parts of the state.

On instructions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, chief secretary Rajiv Kumar will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon, in which officials from various departments will discuss the situation arising out the hazy weather conditions and suggest measures to tackle the problem, a senior government official said here this morning.

The entire western and central UP is engulfed with thick smog for the past two days.

In Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar districts of the NCR, all the schools up to standard five were ordered closed and children and elderly people were advised to stay home.

Due to hazy conditions, road and rail traffic were affected. Four people died in road accidents this morning and at least 35 people were injured in accidents in Mathura, Moradabad, Hapur, Etah, Aligarh and Badaun.

In Aligarh, two people died and more than 10 were injured in four separate accidents with vehicles colliding as a result of poor visibility due to smog. In two accidents in Lodha area of Aligarh, two people died and four others were injured in a collision involving four vehicles. Six people were also injured in another incident on the new highway due to fog.

A report from Mathura said two people died and six were injured when six vehicles collided on the Yamuna Expressway near Mahawan this morning. Besides, in Etah, a bus driver was injured on Etah-Aliganj highway on Jaithara police station in a bus-tractor collision.

In Badaun, eight people were injured in a bus collision near Usawan on Badaun-Farrukahbad highway. In Hapur, four people were injured in collision between two vehicles under Dehat police station area.
