CHILE: The fires of last summer had a high impact on the national flora and fauna. Thanks to the coordinated work between the National Forestry Corporation, CONAF, and Firefighters of Chile, the situation was controlled. However, the cost was very high. Not only flora and fauna. Complete houses and even a whole town were consumed. In the search to be better prepared for situations of this magnitude, both institutions signed a protocol.

The purpose is to strengthen, strengthen, guide and coordinate joint actions. Both nationally and regionally. In addition to increasing the protection of people, the integrity of their assets and the conservation of values and resources of the environment against the danger of forest fires.

Organized operation

The protocol hopes to optimize the work between the two entities. / Agency One
This protocol establishes the creation of two committees. The first of national coordination. This will have as main tasks to agree on operational guidelines and regional protocols, both in the urban forest interface and in other rural areas.

In addition to proposing or establishing coordination and mutual assistance measures and supervising the agreed actions and keeping these agreements updated.

The importance of this protocol

For the Executive Director of CONAF, Aarón Cavieres, “both institutions are the great actors that fight forest fires and the need to articulate, to continue working together, as we have been doing and above all in light of what is coming , it is urgent to strengthen ties. ”

In addition, he added that this protocol has a strong local work on the part of both institutions. “Work from the local level is a priority. The closer we are to face the initial attack there are greater chances of success, and in that sense articulation at the base level is urgent, “said Cavieres.

For his part, the National Fire Department of Chile, Miguel Reyes Núñez, said that “the last agreement with CONAF dates back to 1993 and has now been updated because there is a greater frequency of fires, which require the joint work of both institutions.” “The purpose of this firm is to protect both people and the environment against forest fires and thus be able to jointly coordinate the work at the central, regional and local levels,” added Reyes.

Regional committees

The regional committees will promote the bases to establish the Incident Command System. Especially in relation to Unified Command and Unified Command, as agreed in the Regional Protocol. Procedures will be agreed for the collection of statistical information.

The objective is to provide mutual assistance in material and management aspects, depending on the capacities and competences of both parties. Of course, as long as there is budgetary and material availability to make this possible.
