Herriman, Utah — An artillery round ignited a wildfire at a Utah National Guard base today. It burned 500 acres and forced the evacuation of about 50 homes in the area.
The fire at Camp Williams spread because authorities could not immediately enter areas of live ordnance to try to control it. Major Hank McIntire says it was completely contained by evening.
The fire began during routine training drills, about 25 miles south of Salt Lake City.
