Maalaea, Hawaii — A new wildfire ignited in the West Maui Mountains this weekend, this time torching about 500 acres of brush.
This wildfire started just one week after another blaze that destroyed about four-thousand acres.
This weekend’s fire at times came dangerously close to Honoapiilani Highway, and drivers frequently slowed down to watch the flames up in the hills.
The blaze started yesterday morning near the Kaheawa wind farm at about a 25-hundred foot elevation on Kealaloloa Ridge.
The fire was contained by yesterday evening.
Firefighters say they struggled with the fire because of wind gusts of up to 32 miles per hour.
This fire was located just west of last weekend’s scorcher, and it was considerably less severe.
