USA: EAST BREMERTON — A brush fire burned about an acre of forestland in Illahee Preserve Heritage Park Monday afternoon, closing Riddell Road for hours.

Firefighters from Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue and Bremerton Fire Department responded to the fire at about 2:40 p.m. The fire burned forest land near NE Riddell Road and Laddie Place in Illahee.

The fire, initially reported as 75 feet by 75 feet, grew to about an acre before crews contained it just after 4 p.m.

Wildland fires can continue to burn underground in the roots of trees and even travel after the fire on the surface has been extinguished, Tague said.

Firefighters found signs of an encampment nearby, but the cause of the blaze is unknown, according to CKFR spokeswoman Ileana LiMarzi.
