Avalon, California, USA –Santa Catalina Island businesses are using the Webto let vacationers know the resort island is open for business after a recentwildfire.

An e-mail and Web campaign will highlight the fact that the fire threatened, butnever reached, tourist facilities in the city of Avalon. The mid-May firescorched more than 4,700 acres of wilderness and destroyed one home and sixindustrial building in the city’s western edge.

Businesses closed for four days during the fire and lost more than $2 million intourist revenues.

“For three days we were on international television with tight shots ofeverything going up, when in fact they never pulled back and gave youperspective on the community,” complained Wayne Griffin, the island Chamberof Commerce president, quoted in the Long Beach Press Telegram.

Griffin says Web cameras will show the tourist zone is back to normal.

“We’ve been getting calls asking about air quality, ash on the ground andand smoke in the air, and debris in the bay, none of which exists now,”Griffin said.
