USA – MARTIN COUNTY County and state firefighters battled a 28-acre brush fire in the Hungryland Wildlife and Environmental Area Saturday, according to Martin County Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service officials.
Fire Rescue crews responded about 6:30 p.m. to a vehicle fire at the preserve area near Pratt Whitney Road, Fire Rescue spokesman Chris Stabile said. Winds carried the embers from a vehicle fire to a grassy area in the preserve.
No structures were threatened.
More than a dozen other wildfires have flared up on the Treasure Coast since April, with six in Martin County, seven in St. Lucie County and one in Indian River County. Most of those fires were caused by lightning.
Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties issued burn bans in late April and early May because of the dry, fire-prone conditions.
No further information was available Saturday.
