Hazard reduction burns in Bega Valley this weekend

Australia – The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is undertaking a number of hazard reduction burns in the coming days to take advantage of favourable weather conditions.
A burn is planned for Friday, May 5, at Reedy Creek, 2km west of Burragate in South East Forests National Park. Another burn is planned for Sunday, May 7, at Kianinny, in Bournda National Park.
These burns follow two others undertaken this week at Honeysuckle south-east of Eden in Ben Boyd National Park on Wednesday and a burn at Kangarutha, east of Wallagoot in Bournda National Park.
NPWS Merimbula area manager Stephen Dovey said the burns aim to reduce fuel loads and the potential for wildfire to spread to neighbouring properties.
The drying conditions over the past few weeks have allowed us to commence our autumn hazard reduction program, Mr Dovey said.
Neighbours in the vicinity of these burns may experience smoke and we apologise for any inconvenience.
Motorists are reminded that smoke may affect visibility, so please drive to the conditions, adhere to local signage and any direction given by our onsite fire crews.
We greatly appreciate the assistance of Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews at several of our burns, Mr Dovey said.
These burns are part of the NSW Governments $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the States national parks, where conditions allow.
