Australia VICTIMS of Victorias Black Saturday bushfires will receive almost $700 million in compensation before Christmas.
Victorian Supreme Court Justices John Dixon and Jack Forrest today approved the distribution of settlements awarded in class actions to those who lost loved ones and property in the Kilmore East-Kinglake and Murrindindi bushfires.
The catastrophic fires on February 7, 2009 claimed 173 lives across Victoria including 119 in the Kilmore East-Kinglake region, where almost 1800 properties were destroyed, and 40 in Murrindindi, where some 500 homes were destroyed.
