USA —  CANA — Officials have confirmed the death of an elderly woman in Cana in connection with a Friday afternoon brush fire at a trailer on 2305 Meadowbrook Road.

According to Emergency Services Coordinator Everett Lineberry, a brush fire call was received at 11:40 a.m. and within five minutes another call was received reporting someone had fallen in connection with the blaze.

Lineberry said fire and rescue units responded within minutes and discovered the body on an elderly women along the tree line. Preliminary evidence suggests she was trying to burn leaves when the fire got out of control and spread to the woods, with subsequent efforts to put out the fire leading to her succumbing to smoke inhalation.

Further information has not been released due to the ongoing investigation and notification of kin. Agencies involved in the incident include the Cana Volunteer Fire Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Forestry Service, Carroll County Fire and Rescue, and the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department from Surry County, N.C.
