WWF Greece Calls on Citizens to Help Spread Forest Fire Awareness and Prevention

Greece Following the dreary news from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) thatforest fires in Greece has been dubbed the fifth worst year in a decade for 2016, the environmental conservation organization, WWF Greece, has called for action.
At a meeting forWWF Greece on Thursday, the organizations local action coordinator, Elias Tziritis called for greater public education in forest protection against fires.
The fire protection mechanism is not just state agencies, Tziritis said. Every citizen needs to feel they are an important link in the chain of protection of our forests.
According to data from the EFFIS, Greece had a horrific year with more than 30,000 hectares of brush and forest fire burning throughout the country. The worst damage by fires was noted on theislands of Thasos,Chios andEvia.
