South Africa A 56-year-old farmer sustained moderate burns while fighting a runaway grass fire in Ingagane outside Newcastle this afternoon.
At approximately 1pm paramedics were dispatched to the area to assist.
The fire was raging between two farms and pushed by strong winds. ER24 crews had to jump in and help contain the fire due to very limited resources. Newcastle Community Police Forum members and farmers from other towns came to assist and the fire was later brought under control.
The farmer was treated on scene for moderate burns to his hands and face. He was later transported to Mediclinic Newcastle for further care.
