Australia —    REGIONS including the Eyre Peninsula are expected to receive support for reducing the threat of bushfire through a $16 million investment from the State Government.

The 2016-17 budget allocation will expend the prescribed burning program and allow updated and more detailed mapping for SES map books.

The investment will take place over the next four years to help plan, prepare for and reduce the threat of bush fires.

The expansion is expected to create more than 30 jobs with increased support to local CFS brigades in the targeted areas.

The initial focus will be on the Mount Lofty Ranges region.

Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula strategy and knowledge manager Susan Stovell said the funding would benefit the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources’ fire management activities, including on the Eyre Peninsula.

“The focus of the welcome new funding will be to increase DEWNR’s fire management capacity in the high risk Mount Lofty Ranges region and expand its prescribed burning program to include private land,” she said.

“It will increase DEWNR’s overall capacity to deliver prescribed burning activities, which will benefit Eyre Peninsula in the delivery of the regional prescribed burning program.”

State Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the investment was important because South Australia wasn’t just at risk of more bushfires, but more complex bushfires.

“Every outbreak has the potential to put lives at risk,” he said.

“The Government is committed to addressing the increasing threat of bushfires and this funding will expand and improve our fire management capabilities.
